Kindness to Elderly

The Prophet (pbuh) said: "If a young man honors an elderly on account of his age, Allah(God) appoints someone to honor him in his old age."

Allah(God) said: "Allah(God) has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honour. And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility, and say: 'My Lord! bestow on them your Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood'." (Quran: 17/23-24)

IbnKathir tells the following in his biography of the Prophet (pbuh). When the Prophet (pbuh) entered Makkah in January 630 and entered the Sacred Mosque, Abu Bakr brought his father, Abu Quhafah, to the Prophet (pbuh) to embrace Islam. When the Prophet (pbuh) saw him, he said to Abu Bakr, "Why didn't you leave the old man at his house and I would've gone to him there?"

When parents reach an old age, they should be treated mercifully and kindly. Caring for parents in the most difficult time of their lives is a proud behaviour. The Prophet (pbuh) advises the young of the society, who will be tomorrow's elderly, to act kindly to the elderly.

The prophet (pbuh) said : "If a young man honors an elderly on account of his age, Allah(God) appoints someone to honor him in his old age." ( Hadith, At-Tirmidhi ). By the words "If a young man honors an elderly" , the Prophet(pbuh) emphasizes honoring the elderly regardless of their color or religion.

( pbuh = peace be upon him )
