Human Gender Ratios

"That Allah(God) did create in pairs,- male and female, from a seed when lodged (in its place)." (Quran: 53/45-46)

The sex ratio at birth is estimated to be close to 1.06 males/female. In other words, the sex ratio of males is higher than the sex ratio of females at birth. On the other hand, in most populations, adult males tend to have higher death rates than adult females of the same age both due to natural causes such as heart attacks, and also to violent causes, such as homicide and warfare, resulting in higher life expectancy of females.

Consequently, the sex ratio (male/female) tends to reduce as age increases, and among the elderly there is usually an excess of females. Therefore the general sex ratio in the society is 1:1 which is the ideal ratio for the balance of nature.

If the sex ratio of males at birth was not higher than the sex ratio of females at birth, male population would decrease and extinct. But Allah(God) created the universe with a balance and let us examine the genetic facts beyond this balance:

Human cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes for a total of 46. There are 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes. The sex chromosomes are the X chromosome and the Y chromosome. The male sperm cells in humans contain one of two types of sex chromosomes. They are either X or Y. The female eggs however, contain only the X sex chromosome . If a sperm cell containing an X chromosome fertilizes an egg, the resulting zygote will be XX or female. If the sperm cell contains a Y chromosome, then the resulting zygote will be XY or male.

The sex ratio difference is accounted for by the mass difference in sperm carrying Y chromosomes compared to those carrying X chromosomes. Sperms carrying Y (male) chromosome are lighter (and faster) than sperms carrying X(female) chromosome . The 6% more males born is a result of lighter sperm being more likely to reach the egg first as they may achieve more velocity through the thick fluid.

Our universe has a perfect balance and harmony. This balance is another proof of Allah(God)'s power.
